Five movement cards are all it takes to turn a small board into a demanding tactical duel. In Onitama, two players guide a master and their students across a five by five arena, looking for the precise move that will break through the opposing formation.

Your available cards show how a piece may move. After using one, you exchange it with the card beside the board, passing that movement option into the game's continuing rotation. Every move therefore changes both your position and the possibilities that will become available in later turns.

There are two ways to win: capture the opposing master, or move your own master onto the opponent's temple space. Those competing threats keep both players alert. A move that protects against a capture may expose the temple, while a tempting attack can leave your own master without a safe retreat.

With all movement options visible and no random draws after setup, Onitama rewards observation, anticipation and learning from each encounter. Different starting card combinations reshape the contest without adding a heavy rules burden. It is an excellent fit for two players who enjoy abstract strategy and short matches that invite another attempt with a fresh understanding of the position.
