Two rival teams know that the right single word can reveal a surprising connection. Codenames: Second Edition is a word-association party game in which each team's spymaster knows the secret identities of agents hidden among a grid of words.

The spymaster offers a one-word clue and a number indicating how many friendly words it might connect. Teammates discuss the possibilities and touch the words they believe belong to their side. A wrong guess could help the opposition, end the turn or uncover the assassin and lose immediately.

The challenge lies in finding a clue that unites several words without pointing too strongly toward something dangerous. Guessers have their own work to do: reading the spymaster's intent, weighing competing interpretations and deciding when to stop. The new edition refreshes the word list and presentation while retaining the familiar team contest.

Codenames works especially well when players like to explain why an unlikely clue suddenly makes sense. Because the grid changes every game, the same group can return to it many times with new ideas.
